Koppel Project’in sanatçılara katkısı bulunan etkinliklerinden birinde bu haftasonu Art Inspired: A Masterclass with Estelle Lovatt vardı. HOW TO ARTIST isimli kitabından, sanatçı olmanın zorluklarından, seçimlerinden ve sürecinden bahsederken, Lovatt tarihteki önemli sanatçıların izledikleri yollardan sınıfında örneklerle yer verdi. Bir sanatçı olarak dikkatle dinleyip, aldığım notları sizlerle paylaşacağım. Seminerin sonunda getirdiğimiz eserlerimizi kritize eden Lovatt’ın herbirimize inanılmaz katkısı olduğu için minnettarım.
Estelle Lovatt önemli bir sanat tarihçisi, kritiği, yazar, ve küratördür. Mall Galleries’in önemli yarışmalarında juri üyesi ve kendisi yolculuğuna ressam olarak başlamış önemli bir sanat uzmanıdır. How to Artist kitabına konuşmasında yer verirken, seminerine Artist kelimesine bir fiil olarak baktığını bir sıfat olarak görmediğini vurgularken, fiilin içeriğindeki bitmeyen üretime yer verdi. Bu üretimin ana temellerini Holy Trinity’e benzetirken bir üçgen temellerine koyuyor. Sürecin içeriğindeki akışı ise bitmeyen sonsuz çember olarak değerlendiriyor.
Sanat tarihindeki ismi geçerli önemli sanatçıların, sanatçılarla olan ilişkisinin önemini şöyle vurguluyor. Birbirleri üzerindeki destekleri, gelişimlerine olan etkisindeyken, birarada çalışma şansları olmasa bile birbirlerinden esinlendikleri sürece onların ruhunun sanatçıların ellerinde olduğunu ve her daim birbirlerine yol gösterdiğini söylüyor. Sanatçı içinde olduğu ızdıraplı süreçte her aldığı nefeste ilham bulmak için çabalamak yerine üretmek için kendini adarken, ilhamın ona aktığını vurguluyor. Her daim çalışmak ve sürecin içerisinde de pes etmeden devam etmeliyiz. “Başarı”ya giden sürecin içerisinde “hareketsiz”olmanın “kaybetmek”den daha kötü olduğunu, her kabettiğimiz kapıyı kazanana kadar yoklamaya devam etmenin ise birgün farklı bir jüri sayesinde açılacağını Tracy Emin’den örnekler vererek anlattı.
Sanatçının kartvizitinin rengi, paletinde kullandığı ton skalası ve kompozisyonu olduğunu ve bitmeyen sürecinin ise teorisinden, çabasından, pratikten ve düşünceden geçtiğini üçgen ve daire temelleri içinde Artist hareketli sürecinde ilerliyor. Bu yolda amatör olanın ilham aradığını ama gerçek sanatçının pratikte bulduğunu, en basit oyuncaklarla bile sanatçı olan ilham alabiliyor. Frank Gerry kırıştırıp attığı kağıtlardan önemli yapıtlarını oluştururken, Mondrian bir ağacı basite indirgeyerek üç renkle özetlediği geometrik eserlerine ulaşıyor. Nefes terapisinde alıp verdiğimiz nefesleri sayarak komplike hale getirip stresse girmemiz yerine; Estelle Lovatt süreçte bir çocuk gibi uçuşan balonları sabundan yaparken üflemeyi tercih etmeliyiz dedi. Sürecin ızdırabında yarattıkça özgüven artıyor, stress seviyesi düşüyor, endişe azalıyor, pratik artıyor, gözlerimiz yeniye açılıyor; ve sanat dünyasındaki yerimizi buluyoruz. Fakat bu süreç tekrarlarken, entelektüel ve duygusal alanımızın beyin içinde birleşerek ızdırapla yaratım için çıkarken en baştan sona kendini sürekli tekrar ettiğini unutmamalıyız. Izdırap bitmiyor. Önemli olan süreçte keyif alarak üretmek.
Pes etmek yok! Estelle Lovatt için bugünün Rembrant’ı Tracy Emin ve Damien Hirst Turner’dan esinlendikçe kendini bugünün Turner’ı yaptı. Rembrandth döneminde, sanat dünyasını değiştirebilecek kapasitenin olduğu birzamanda yaşamadı. Onun kart viziti, döneminde hep renkleri, kullandığı ışığı ile paleti olarak kaldı. Fakat Tracy Emin yerleştirmelerinde otoportresi olarak yatağını galeriye koyduğunda sanat dünyasını değiştirdi. O anlamda Emin günümüzün Rembranth’ı oldu. Yeni gözlere sahip keşfetmeye açık olan sanatçı, pratiğini geliştirdikçe, ve entelektüel ve duygusal düşüncesini aşındırdıkça sanat dünyasının akışını değiştirebilecek.

Masterclass on HOW TO ARTIST by Estelle Lovatz
This weekend, I was honered to attend Art Inspired: Masterclass with Estelle Lovatt presented to us by Koppel Project. In this class, Lovatt presented us her latest book HOW TO ARTIST and talked over the difficulties of being an artist, its challanges, and how the famous artists in history survived and became whom they are today. I am willing to go over my notes that I took during this class as an artist. I am so grateful to Estelle Lovatt for making us the time to give us an extremely motivating art critic at the end of her talk.
To the ones that are not heard, Estella Lovatt is an art historian, critic, and a curator. As Mall Galleries jury member, she has started her art expertise as a painter and continued her successful artistic career as a writer. She has shared her expertise with us during her talk, and given great examples and quotes from her recent book HOW TO ARTIST in order to strengthen her point in the difficulties of being an artist. She sees the word Artist not as a noun but a verb in action in an endless process. She summarizes the structure of the process like Holy Trinity and presenting it as a triangle and the process itself in action like an endless circle.
In art history, wellknown artists always present themselves with the soul of their work to the other artists. By doing this, they evolve in the hands of the establishing artists. Whether artists work together, know eachother or not, they inspire eachother by following each others presentations. Lovatt believes this is the way artists guide eachother. In the struggle of the artist, the practice should be the main focus rather than looking for inspiration because through the process of practice the inspiration flows in work itself. So Artist should never give up of practicing. Lovatt said “No action” is always worse than “Failure” in the process of “Success” because as we knock on the doors for success, we will find a different jury at the end to open the door for us, as it did happen to Tracy Emin.
Artists business card is their use of color, light, and composition such as a triangle and their endless process is thought, theory, execution and practice such as a circle. This is how Artist continues in action based on the structure of this kind of triangle and circle. The amateur would keep on looking for inspiration in this action but the professional will keep practicing for the inspiration to arrive through this process. The inspiration is in the simple things Lovatt says and gives example from how Frank Gerry uses crumbles of paper for inspiration to make his masterpieces and how Mondrian comes to his geometrical structures from simplifying trees. Estelle Lovatt believes that we should enjoy the process like kids enjoying making bubbles instead of trying to breathe by counting in order to reduce stress levels as they do in breathing sessions. In an artists process the struggle always continues, as the artist continues to create, but the stress level lowers as the self-confidence rises through creation. Than they worry less, create more, practice more… So they open new eyes for discovery to find a place in the artworld by combining the use of intellectual and emotinal sides of brain in an endless journey. The struggle never ends but as artists we need to learn to enjoy the process. We should make bubbels to breathe safer, enjoy life and get inspired through the process of practice.
We should never give up! Lovatt says Tracy Emin is todays Rembrandth and Damien Hirst became todays Turner as he continued to get inspired by Turner’s work. Rembrandth did not live in a time that he was able to change the course of the art world. His business card was his colors, use of light, and palette at his time. When Tracy Emin places her own bed in a gallery space as her selfportrait, she changes the course of the art world. In that case she became todays Rembrandth. The artist who has the new eyes that are open for discovery, hands that practice for improvement, and brain that functions for intellectual and emotional thought will always have the chance to change the course of artworld.
